Being captain and then deliberately missing qualifiers would be a bit ridiculous though, wouldn't it? He's awful for England, hasn't played well in years.

That's correct. But then again you can be Liverpool through and through and still go to Chelsea IMO. It is a job after all. They are not fans, they are employees. I think he really wanted to go to Chelsea because his chances of winning things were far greater there.
