IMO we haven't had a good captain since Tony Adams. He was a great leader both on & off the pitch. Forgetting any obvious problems he encountered which he made good anyway, he inspired the team, gave encouragement when needed, and had the respect from his team mates. If Tony said 'jump' you asked how high?
Some of you will say Vierra was a good captain, I grant you he was better than the 2 since, but still nowhere near the Adams mould.
Henry (loved the guy) but total waste of the armband.
Gallas - not a proper leader and prone to tantrums. ok, he does a half decent job, but doesn't instill the encouragement that Adams used to do.
So, who should replace him then? I dunno, Fabregas in the future would be a popular choice, not just because we love him, but because he has the right attitude, and I think will make a good captain.
One of the problems we have now is a lack of leadership on the field. Yes, we have many other problems that I'm getting depressed with reading about, so I thought we might discuss the captaincy again as we haven't done that for a while.
Why not Gallas? TA6 was a great captain for a English club culture with a few important English players too. He was a natural and instinctively made all the right noises. IMO it's less straightforward in the new club culture and cultural mix of the team. Gallas does not make the right noises/press the right buttons for English Arsenal fans but maybe that is different within the team. Just a thought.
I would give it to Toure, think he is the only player that could handle the role, and am a bit old fashioned, liking centre halfs to carry the armband.
You know what, Senderos would have made a good captain, because for all his technical lackings, you couldn't fault his commitment, and he seemed like a vocal member of the side.
